Bocas del Toro Water Taxi 101
Water taxis in Bocas del Toro are small, private boats that operate consistently across the islands. Frequently operated by locals, these boats are essential for navigating the region since many islands are only accessible via water.
Typically, water taxi prices range from $3 to $10 per trip, depending on your destination and the number of passengers. Always confirm pricing before starting your trip, and expect to pay cash.
HOW MUCH DOES A WATER TAXI COST?
The prices listed below are correct as of January 2025.
To / From Bocas Town, one way, per person
Isla Carenero $2
Old Bank, Isla Bastimentos $5
Red Frog Beach, Isla Bastimentos $8 (you'll also pay a $5 fee to access the beach via the short cut path)
Blue Coconut Bar & Restaurant, Isla Solarte $10
Please note, the water taxis will not take you to Playa Drago / Starfish Beach or Zapatilla Island unless you book a full day tour with them.
WHAT WATER TAXI COMPANY SHOULD I USE?
If you search on google maps, you'll see reviews filled with complaints of scams. We had a pleasant experience while there but its probably best to ask your hotel or AirBnb for a vendor recommendation, especially if you want to take a tour or longer trip while in the Bocas. Use common sense and realize that these are small boat operators, not travel agents. If they're offering to book you a bus tour to Panama City for example, its likely not legit.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS FROM BOCAS TOWN
We stayed in Bocas town during our stay which has tons of options to pick from. Because of our AirBnb's location at the south tip of the town, we used Boteros Bocaterños Unidos and Coopeguitour Muelle due to their close proximity and had a pleasant experience with both.
There are many companies in Bocas Town though, so find the one whose location works best for you. The below is not a fully comprehensive list but consider:
Transporte Maritimo Valencia (who we used for transportation from Almirante)
FROM OLD BANK, BASTIMENTOS
Old Bank doesn't have different stands in the same way that Bocas Town does. You'll simply walk up to the ferry dock located here and use whoever is waiting.
FROM RED FROG BEACH, BASTIMENTOS
If you're staying at Palmar Beach Lodge you'll work with the hotel to arrange all transportation.
For those just visiting on a day trip, I would HIGHLY recommend booking a round trip boat. You'll tell the driver at your drop off here what time you want to be picked back up and they will be waiting for you at the predetermined time. There was a boat who could have taken us back when we visited but I think it's better not to take the risk since you're in a more remote part of the island.

HOW TO BOOK A WATER TAXI
The good news is that booking a water taxi in Bocas del Toro is very easy! As long as you are semi flexible there is no reason to pre book or stress google arrangements prior to your arrival. All you have to do is pick your company and walk in. During our 5 day stay, there were always boats ready and waiting. You just give your destination, confirm the price and be off on an island adventure. On some occasions, you may wait for a few minutes for additional people to fill the boat but sit back and relax while you wait - you're on vacation after all!
Happy island hopping.
